Are we all responsible for each other's happiness or only our own?
Society is a social contract. If you follow the laws, everything should work out OK. If things don't work out, there are safety nets in place. Society will help you out. That's why we pay taxes.

Religion promises the same thing. If religion doesn't make sense, you may be having a few problems with society's rules. Like..., gay marriage, pro/con gun control, abortions, the death penalty, how much taxes the rich pay, wars, marijuana, home work, liberalism, etc. ;) Side: our own
