If they attack you personally - it means they don't have a decent argument left.

Usually it means either they can't attack the argument, so the easiest thing to attack is you.

Jewel you cannot pay attention!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me help out here !!!!!!!!

New York (CNN)Hillary Clinton told CNN on Wednesday that it is time to abolish the Electoral College, part of a sweeping interview where the former Democratic nominee sought to explain why she lost the 2016 election.

Clinton, in the interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, displayed her animus for fired FBI Director James Comey, reflected on her love for the people -- namely former President Bill Clinton -- who helped her get through the crushing loss and blasted the arcane election body that she believes helped Donald Trump win the presidency.

"I think it needs to be eliminated," Clinton said of the Electoral College. "I'd like to see us move beyond it, yes."

^ See above for prime example. But that did remind me to add something..."Usually it means either they can't attack the argument or have absolutely nothing relevant to add, so the easiest thing to attack is you."

If you don't have anything nice to say, then say nothing at all ;)

Debating is when you are trying to convince your opponent, or by an extension the audience, as to why your views are better than that of your adversary. Personal attacks are when people start running out of points, and grow desparate and as a result lose their calm.

I personally think the action of attacking someone personally can be considered a legitimate tactic in an argument. It can easily be used to get a rise out of an opponent and cause them to get emotional, which can make them get defensive and/or angry, causing them to stop using reasonable logic for the sake of defending themselves.

You're making the extremely common mistake of thinking an argument is about belittling or mocking your opponent rather than simply finding out who is right. Attacking your opponent might make him emotional, but it won't make you right and him wrong. If you are making an appeal to populism then it might help bring people onto your side, but of course it is a fallacy that this has any relationship to being right.

In short, it is disappointing that you feel mockery and/or ad hominem are legitimate tactics to use during an argument, because it implies you haven't grasped the point of why arguments are important in the first place.

Nom, you are the site's biggest implementer of ad hominem there is, has been or will be. I have never seen another user use insults as the actual strengthening or punchline part of the argument as often as you do it.

I'm not saying it makes you right or wrong. I'm saying it is a tactic that has be used many times to great effect. Also I didn't say that personal attacks are all arguments are. I know arguments need sound logic and facts in them. I just believe that it can be used and it doesn't mean that they don't have a decent argument left.

I disagree. Some people are just plain deceitful. They do nothing but lie, in order to promote their godless agenda. Others are just plain stupid enough to insult anyone with a double digit IQ.

True. That is the case. there are really deceitful people who use personal attacks on others. But, it isn't always like that. Such as politicians, good and bad, using personal attacks in debates with each other and still end up winning. It is underhanded and many bad people use it. But, every now and again it can work. Even if it shouldn't.

Side: True.

Right wingers seem to do this a lot. Bronto's main argument against Nom is that he "lives in his moms basement because he's a leftist"
