My financial stimulus package? Legalize weed!

Legalizing marijuana would have four immediate effects:

1.  Stimulate the economy through taxation and sales.

2.  Make people not care  ;)

3.  Reduce the jail population thus saving money.

4.  Increase the sale of snack foods.

Best plan yet. I've been telling people this since they started discussing the economy bullshit almost a year ago. And others have been saying it way longer than that. Way back to, like, the founding of the country.

"Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country."

- Thomas Jefferson

He was in support of marijuana but didn't say that exact statement.

I do not remember Thomas Jefferson talking about Ganja.

That's a real quote my friend. He really did.

let me also add that "Industrial hemp has little in common with marijuana. While marijuana produces a high when smoked, hemp doesn’t. This is because the level of THC in hemp is below 1%. No THC, no high. As more people become educated of the benefits of hemp, there is more interest in examining its potential and legalizing it. Unfortunately, Federal anti-drug officials say that allowing such crops would create a slippery slope toward legalizing marijuana. Currently, the U.S. is the only developed nation that has not established hemp as a legal crop. Great Britain lifted its ban in 1993; Germany did so in 1996; and Canada followed two years later. The European Union has subsidized hemp production since the 1990s."

We could have money with a picture of cannabis and below it the caption, "in weed we trust" and these legal tenders could be issued by the bank of Ganja ;)

This statement kind of irritates me to an extreme. Crack is illegal, crack is nothing like marijuana, marijuana should be legalized and regulated. Crack should NEVER be regulated!!

Side: Like, yeah, dude, rock on!

Exactly, I'm glad some people understand. The economy would make an enormous profit from marijuana.

While i agree with legalizing it,

i dont fully agree with the potheads or stoners

due to the fact that i am not a pothead or stoner

i am a person who happens to enjoy smoking

and obviously im not the only one

theres potheads, and people who smoke

just like theres alchoholics, and people who drink

if it becomes legal, nothing will change for me other than the fact that instead of picking it up from a shady dealer, it will be at a 7'eleven. Sounds safer to me

Side: Like, yeah, dude, rock on!

I thought the shady dealers hung out at the 7-eleven? Isn't that where everyone gets their weed? ;)

Side: Like, yeah, dude, rock on!

Shady dealers dont meet in public...well at least the ones that have stuff worth buying. :)

I would like to add the factor of cannabis entering our agriculture as well.

1.helps the earth, more green, more clean (especially this plant)

2.hemp is the strongest fiber in the world next to cotton and makes more paper per acre than trees.

3.grows incredibly easy and in my opinion would look and smell beautiful.

I don't smoke it, nor do I want to smoke it (even if it were legal). But this only makes sense for the economy.

And yes, there should be regulations much like there is of alcohol (age limit, don't smoke and drive, etc).

for one thing..because of the immovable taboos that are prevalent on most cultures attributed to pot use, we as a country would attract more tourist and stop the waste of money being used by our countrymens on trips and "leisure trips" abroad..

Side: Like, yeah, dude, rock on!

Dude, you don't even know!

Legalizing marijuana would aid us in oh so many ways!

If we legalize marijuana, we could do all the things you have stated, but we could also use hemp to manufacture clothes. We could make the United States (assuming you are from the united states) a hemp manufacturing powerhouse. This would create jobs, and produce exports, thus helping stimulate the economy. Also, like you said, it would create less arrests. Another big thing it would do, is put a giant dent in the Mexican Drug Cartel's business, weakening them. :)

I made a vow after the other weed debate not to get involved in another one... As soon as I posted several different potheads (they admitted it) joined the site simply to bash me. It was brutal. Haha

But I like your reasons, especially 2 and 4. And I like the art/money.

I am digging deep to come up with an argument for this side. OK, here it goes:

In 2007, there were 872,720 marijuana arrests in the United States. Of those, 775,137 were for possession.

Think about how many jobs in the US prison system would be lost if the population of inmates shrank by 3/4 of a million people! Who would pay the lobbyists? And you dare suggest that is OK just so we can legalize a leaf that could help millions and sick people and spawn a multi-billion dollar hemp industry?

Wow way to take it to a level that made me think. Yes now that I read that you took the debate from a joke to kind of being serious. I agree now that I read your post.

Side: What? You freaking pot head

I'm going to dig myself deeper still to come up with a rebutal that takes your position.

Lets not legalize weed. Lets us instead create jobs by imprisoning millions of illegal, undocumented, workers.

I hate it when there are no easy solutions. Which is like.... a lot of the time :)

BTW, I recommend, "Slumdog Millionaire" the movie.

You're really digging aren't you. ( I'm pretty sure you're being sarcastic but in the case you are not here goes)

I encourage you look to the privatization of the prison system and the inefficiencies of the current legal and jail systems.

You said 3/4 of a million people would be what the inmates shrank. I'm sorry but arrests does not mean they are in jail!

I do say it's ok to legalize a plant that has more benefits than downfalls. Also following the fact that it was legal prior to the 70's for more years than it's been illegal. (war on drugs is a joke and a huge waste of tax payer money in an attempt by many corporations to remain at the head of their game) In this time it would be a savior plant to this country. (not only as a cash crop but also in the advancements of botany and genetics) Let me also add that we currently Genetically modifying over 70% of the main cash crops (soy beans, corn, wheat, etc) in the US and of that number, 99% are modified to aid in herbicides and pesticides aka chemical based poisons. So if that's ok than why wouldn't this be?

Side: Like, yeah, dude, rock on!

Way to go, excellent dispute. It is pretty appalling that so many marijuana arrests were made in the first place.

This is disgusting, all those people deserve to be free. Marijuana is harmless, they never should have been in prison in the first place.

Nah, I'd like for this to remain illegal. I don't want a bunch of stoners walking around getting high and can't function in society. I'd rather bust the pot heads and get MORE money from possession, court and probation fines rather than legalizing it and making money that way.

Side: What? You freaking pot head

That is the purpose for regulation. You can't be drunk in public legally, so why stoned in public? I am sorry, but your logic is horrible, and your means of getting money from the 'stoners' is completely, and utterly scummy. Your profile picture is an elephant, implying you are a Republican. Republicans are often for big businesses, How about this, hemp manufacturing is a potential export for America. Stop being so ignorant and get educated, kthxbye
