Should governments compete for citizens?

http://www.gizmag.com/seasteading-institute-floating-city-2020/38344/

Individuals are born arbitrarily into states created by past wars and cannot change the government to which they are affiliated without leaving their home. Floating city-states, however, would allow individuals to sail their home to a new colony if they disagreed with the way a government was operating.

This would force governments to compete to attract citizens in a way that they currently do not. The city-states would be like floating jigsaws that could be shifted and reassembled at will, with popular and effective governments attracting more inhabitants. Indeed, governments could only form if people chose to attach to each other.

If this happens, companies can build their own floating headquarters and factories. The factories would then travel to where ever the labor cost is cheaper.

It would be more likely that the labor would live on the factory island. The time it would take to move around would delay production quite a bit.

So... ship them to the floating island from all over the world.

Great concept! A floating city-state would be a warning to those countries that do not adhere to human rights, do not provide decent living conditions, and meddle in war that there is competition out there, and those countries lacking in treating their citizens with due respect better had straighten up their act or face losing a valuable chunk of their citizens.

Why wouldn't those bad governments just sink the floating cities?

Those governments would probably not allow their citizens to leave

Pffft. If illegals can make it into the U.S. of mother fucking A, they should be able to make it out.

Ok.

This did not sound like a bot.

Why are the rest of your responses so non-specific?

The floating city-states would still require self-governance which would lead to more disagreement which leads to floating districts which leads to floating towns which leads to floating neighborhoods which leads to floating houses.

Finally, all the houses join together to form the United Houses of America, 123 million states (houses) and counting.

I want the independent house of joe_cavalry.

Side: Wait..., what? No!!!

EXACTLY MATE,123 million floating houses after swaying for months in the deep blue ocean would finally face the fury of hurricanes later on in winter

How would governments sustain themselves withought citizens for revenue and such?

Side: Wait..., what? No!!!

Exactly. The mofos would be forced to make their citizens happy or lose them.

Side: Wait..., what? No!!!

Well if everybody's floating and rolling, the limiting friction might be less but gain as the cliche goes"Rolling stones gather no moss",likewise floating states wouldn't receive much sunshine and betterment if they keep on floating

Maybe not moss...., but algae....
