Should science ever stop pushing the envelope?

Are we ever going to stop inventing things and just sit back, relax, and enjoy life?

I don't get this debate. I mean, No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery. ;)

That was amazing. If you came up with that, I bow to you, sir.

Yes, but only after I get a flying car and something healthy as broccoli that tastes like chocolate.

A light saber would be cool too. (=

You got it! Well not the broccoli thing...

And I think we could invent a light saber.

Wow, thats pretty cool, not that I can afford it or anything. And I doubt it will be as common as the regular car is.

I'm serious about the broccoli though, you would think with all the amazing technology on this planet we could find a way to make healthy food taste good. Instead we are making unhealthy food taste like crap.

Think about it, broccoli is one of the most healthy foods on the planet, if you ate a full serving of broccoli every day it would increase your longevity by years. Now imagine if it tasted just like Hershey's milk chocolate.

We should. Because this is the alternative:

Humanity continues to make better technology. Eventually we get to the point where we can augment our own intelligence. We achieve singularity. At this point we can pretty much shape the universe according to our whims. We shall be as Gods -- immortal, omnipotent, and all-powerful. Then we will ask ourselves, "What now?" Having achieved perfection we will have nothing left to struggle toward. We will realize that life is pointless and will then kill ourselves in a fit of existential angst.

So it goes.

Hmmm, I always did want to become a God. Maybe I should switch sides ;)

That sounds like if Kurt Vonnegut wrote "The Last Question." But he didn't, Asimov did :P

I miss him so much I might cry now.

Science will always find new solutions and better ways to live from before. As much as life is nice now, science can always improve it.

Nope! Why would we go back to cavemen lifestyle? Ya right. (although, it'd be pretty neat. No bills, and everyone would fight for their own flock).

Side: No

Who said anything about going back. I'm saying like just freeze technological advancements. In other words, when you go to the stores, they will always have the same stuff.

Side: yes

What about when all the technology starts breaking then and there's no parts or people to bother fixing them? Everything breaks eventually, so if we froze technology production as of today, in about 10-20 years, it'd all be totally useless junk sitting around.

You don't have to stop pushing the envelope in order to enjoy what you have achieved so far. Why not do both?

We all work and push the envelope on some field or another. But nothing stops you from enjoying that work, and furthermore enjoying the rest of your day after work.

Also, most of the time, the envelope is pushed unintentionally, as a result of a lot of people's combined work.

Side: No

Yeah, but no matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery. ;)

I'd rather be on a hammock on some tropical island drinking beer and watching the hoola girls :)

Side: No

Science as far as medicine goes should NEVER stop pushing the envelope! We've made such strides in Cancer cures, HIV/AIDS longevity and so many other things it's difficult to imagine what our lives would be like without them. Other sciences must look to themselves for responsible boundaries and if we go too far, too fast, what it might bring us!

Medicinal advancement is a cause of surpopulation, which is a cause of global warming, which will ultimately kill us all.

But for the here and now, everyone wants to be healthy, happy, and have a lot of babies. And I can't disagree with that.

Science should never stop pushing the envelope because then we would surely all die much sooner than if it did.

Side: No

I almost upvoted you when you said: "Medicinal advancement is a cause of surpopulation, which is a cause of global warming, which will ultimately kill us all."

But then I read: "But for the here and now, everyone wants to be healthy, happy, and have a lot of babies. And I can't disagree with that."

I'm conflicted because it's OK to have lots of babies if we take out enough of the older generation so that we have a negative world population growth for X number of years. I mean, what's so bad about dying early? You get to meet your maker, maybe get 42 virgins in the deal, don't ever have to fill out any more tax returns.... what could be better than that :)

Well, I like the elderly. So maybe if we could just lower our growth a little, and then sustain it... we wouldn't have to "take out enough of the older generation."

There is never an easy solution. I think right now the best would be free birth control, advocating the worldwide use and celebration of birth control... and shooting Palin and the Pope...

This way only two people die.

No. In fact, I think we have only begun to touch upon so many things. There is always more to learn and more to understand on so many different levels. On the level of improving life, easing other's plights, finding cures and/or reasons for diseases, birth defects, and making lives better and longer; on the level of learning more about the universe and the origins (and destinations) of life itself; learning more about our planet, and how (if possible) to decrease the harm we have done to her; learning more about DNA, RNA, genes, causes and effects; on technology, etc.

Side: No

I don't think that there will be an end to the study of science. Theres too much for us to learn about.
