Should the U.S. build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico?

China built a wall
and
they have almost no Mexicans.

Excluding the financial encumbrances; there should be a border built for obvious reasons: too many many immigrants cross illegally into the U.S., in conjunction with a large portion of Mexico's drug trafficking/smuggling...

Would it be easier to build a moat? Instead of buying bricks and mortar to build a wall, we could dig a trench, put the excess dirt on one side as a wall, and fill the moat with water. They'll have a hard time digging under it and a hard time climbing over it if the excess dirt is on the U.S. side where they would have to swim up to it and climb. You can also grow cactus on the excess dirt.

This sounds reasonable, however, we are talking about humans who are capable of creating loopholes in such a rudimentary construction. This tactic would still require numerous (costly) security measures because of the massive opportunity for breaching; building a sophisticated border would dilute the finances that fund border patrolmen salaries, excess security measures, and border reconstruction.

Your question underlines the fact that successive Administrations, probably for diplomatic reasons, do not really wish to stem the flow of Mexicans. If the United State's government decided to protect it's citizens from the invading hoards of Mexicans and seriously tackle the problem of greaser immigrants they could do so with great efficiency. If deemed necessary the Yanks could seal their borders with Mexico tight as a drum, but alas, clearly they do not wish to do so. For political purposes the government is only ''paying lip service'' to stopping the flood of ''economic refugees'' from a country of which they made a total mess, and will do exactly the same to the U.S.A. So, even if you built walls, dug moats, erected enormous fences of razor wire, laid mine fields or all four, it would all be to no avail as Washington has neither the will nor the political courage to fulfill it's prime function of protecting it's citizens. The ''Battle of the Alamo'' was all in vain, Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, William Travis and all the brave frontiersmen who sacrificed their lives for their country have been betrayed by 'The White House'.

But Donald Trump says he is not a typical politician and that he would seal the border.

Good for Donald. When the dust from all the political rhetoric settles and the bull shit is extracted one of the most important issues left standing for the American people to resolve is that of unregulated immigration. Anyone who is prepared to stand up to the sanctimonious bellowing of the political correct brigade deserves to be elected. By saying he is not a typical politician doesn't mean that he is not a politician full stop.
