The youth of today have got it so easy!
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... Barefoot... BOTH ways… yadda, yadda, yadda
And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids (or the kids on CD) about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!
But now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty (and I could use some points), I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a dang Utopia!
And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!
I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the dang library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!
I am writing on behalf of my fellow youths of today. In telling you that though I do not prefer writing letters, I do know how to do it. Most kids these days do know how to write letters as well. It is apart of our curriculum at school. I am going to guess I was taught how to write a letter when I was in the 3rd grade!
Your topic is "youth today have got it so easy" but your answer is agree. That not argument. you mean the life in the past is difficult don have email. so it the same meaning like youth todya got so easy..
Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our butt! Nowhere was safe!
Proper discipline - and the children back then were better for it. Kids run around all over the place, getting into god knows how much trouble. They need a good whoopin'.
CPS doesn't care if our parents throw us out or if we're shot in the street. We're just another teen "gang banger" in the morgue and one less trouble maker to them.
There were no MP3's or Napsters or iTunes! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself!
Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and mess it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car.. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Dig?
There weren't any freakin' cell phones either. If you left the house, you just didn't make a damn call or receive one. You actually had to be out of touch with your "friends". OH MY GOD !!! Think of the horror... not being in touch with someone 24/7!!! And then there's TEXTING. Yeah, right. Please! You kids have no idea how annoying you are.
No wonder you have so many damned points, Joe - you create a dozen arguments.
I agree. Kids these days text and talk way too much. Back in the day, if you didn't see your friend frequently, you had no communication with them. Now youngens have no reason to interact in person.
And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your parents, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, the collection agent... you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!
We didn't have any fancy PlayStation or Xbox video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your screen guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen... Forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!
Ah - those were the days. I miss Pong, I miss my original Nintendo, I miss arcades. Those were the days. I am so damn nostalgic! Games today are too easy - PacMan, Galaga - I miss these so much.
You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel!!! NO REMOTES!!! Oh, no, what's the world coming to?!?!
There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying? We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-finks!
TV land? Good job - you've grown up with some of the older shows. Mostly outdated but still fun to watch. My favorites were Flintstones, Looney Tunes, and Tom & Jerry.
And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. Oh, no, no electronics to soothe and comfort. And if you came back inside... you were doing chores!
In Japan, most weapons of any kind are outlawed - very few murders there. After growing up in a neighborhood like yours, Japan would be safer than a proverbial 'walk in the park'.
And car seats - oh, please! Mom threw you in the back seat and you hung on. If you were luckily, you got the "safety arm" across the chest at the last moment if she had to stop suddenly, and if your head hit the dashboard, well that was your fault for calling "shot gun" in the first place!
See! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled rotten! You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980 or any time before!
Hmmm..... Brooklyn. Never been there. used to live on the west side of chicago, and i'd have to say, its got nothing on 903. We have to be packin just to go to school without being killed. We have kids in the 6th grade that are convicted felons.
Most kids do have it easy, but where im from, its not that simple. Kids from my area have to work or hustle to make money to pay for extravagant things that most people take for granted, ex. game systems, ipod's
They don't need those things- they are luxuries. They could do just as well without them. iPods were nonexistent - we had transistor radios with earpieces. We had, a bit later, Pong. Ever heard of Pong? It was a pretty good game - nothing by today's standards, but still good.
The way I've understood it is that the generational quality of life improves differently according to financial class. This is not only because having more money means being able to afford more and greater goods, but also because technology is advancing parabolically. The more poor your family is, the less likely life has gotten easier over time. The inverse is also true.
Everything that you gave as an example is something that parents have to buy. If our parents are buying us all of this stuff, then what do you expect? We are the way we are in spite of our parents and the society around us. I had to sit through the long "I used to walk through rain, snow, sleet, hail and hurricanes and 20 miles to school." Parents can grump around all they want, but it's not going to work if they continue to buy us stuff. The world has advances, that's normal. Why should we be forced to live in the past while we have all of this technology?
Why in my days...., hell..., we didn't even have days. We had ever lasting night...., until someone said, "Let there be light!" Yup..., that's how old I am ;)
No I am not. I haven't read it in awhile but, as I recall, the Norse believed that the first human's left foot procreated with his right foot. They also believed that a cow licked a frozen river. The next day, hair grew out of the river. The next day came a head. The next day a full-fledged human walked out.
We had The Amazing Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, the Ant-man, Action Comics, etc, etc, etc. Not all this anime you punks have now-a-days.
They were twelve cents a piece. TWELVE WHOLE CENTS!
What do you mean 'real'? Most that they have now-a-days are manga and anime - disgusting, in my opinion. The 'real' comics are the oldies from the 60s and early 70s.
Yeah, that's probably true; your parents probably had a lot more fun. Why, you probably were conceived in the back of a very spacious, gas guzzling, car.... that's a lot of fun... try to do that in a Smart Car ;)
Ah, the old days. I remember back when I was in school, only the well-to-do could afford it. Our teacher would lecture us on basic history, maths, and so on. It was a lot easier back then because the map had fewer countries to learn about, none of this "Turkey, Egypt, Bosnia, Romania" etc. We'd go home within walking distance, and our Mammy would make dinner. We used wood stoves, there wasn't electricity yet in our town.
In seriousness, the pre-internet generation can often be baffled by how easy certain tasks are for the post-internet generation. I'm actually glad I was raised in the pre-internet generation, because I would hate having to use social networking websites to keep in contact with people.
And we had better books, too. And a much wider variety.
If we wanted a science fiction, we got an 'ACE double'. If we wanted a western, we got an 'ACE double'. If we wanted a mystery, we got an Ellery Queen or an 'ACE double'.
