Are Liberals Losing the Culture Wars?

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/11/liberals-are-losing-the-culture-war/414175/

Tuesday’s elections, which hinged on social issues such as gay rights and pot, call into question Democrats’ insistence that Republicans are out of step with the times.

In Tuesday’s elections, voters rejected recreational marijuana, transgender rights, and illegal-immigrant sanctuaries; they reacted equivocally to gun-control arguments; and they handed a surprise victory to a Republican gubernatorial candidate who emphasized his opposition to gay marriage.

Democrats have become increasingly assertive in taking liberal social positions in recent years, believing that they enjoy majority support and even seeking to turn abortion and gay rights into electoral wedges against Republicans. But Tuesday’s results—and the broader trend of recent elections that have been generally disastrous for Democrats not named Barack Obama—call that view into question. Indeed, they suggest that the left has misread the electorate’s enthusiasm for social change, inviting a backlash from mainstream voters invested in the status quo.

These results ought to inspire caution among liberals who believe their cultural views are widely shared and a recipe for electoral victory.

You don't win the culture war by being stubborn. Just because the Republicans don't want to change doesn't mean they are winning. Our politicians shouldn't even be elected based on some of these issues.

Actually that's quite correct. The culture war is being won on many fronts. Election of conservative officials by tens of millions of conservative voters is a significant indicator of direction the pendulum is moving.

Just because the Republicans don't want to change doesn't mean they are winning.

Change is not synonymous with improvement. I'll wager that Obama might object if this transgender boy wanted to use the girls shower in the posh private school that his daughters attend. 😳

Our politicians shouldn't even be elected based on some of these issues.

Our politicians are elected by voters to represent the concerns of voters. Exactly where is this not to your liking?

Public opinion and progress on social issues that Republicans oppose is a significant indicator of the opposite direction.

Many of these things are not issues the government should be involved. Those pesky big-government Republicans :P

You aren't winning the culture wars by getting elected. The fact that you call it a pendulum proves that. It swings back and forth regardless of the beliefs of the politicians. You win the culture wars by changing culture.

Change is synonymous with success in the culture wars. Obama didn't have a problem with a transgender kid in his daughters school. He doesn't think transgender kid pose a threat. When Democrats get an idea in their head they go full retard with it.

Not every concern of the voter is valid. We should be electing politicians who will do a good job, and not those that just take a stance on something
