I'm saying looks like it because here is what I believe is happening.

1. There have always been about the same number of these militant, my-way-or-we'll-resort-to-violence-because-there's-a-vast-government-conspiracy-plus-Jesus-loves-guns psychos on the right, and I'd put them at 15-20%

2. Through the 80's and 90's they were ignored by the rest of the fiscal Republicans, just as the crazy uncle should be at family reunions. You say hi, but don't let the kids play around him.

3. In the 90's we had one of the most popular President's in history reside over the greatest economy we ever had, so Republicans had to dip into the crazy pool to get back into power, electing one of the least popular and least capable Presidents in history.

4. Of course there was a huge backlash against having an idiot in office for 8 years, but the crazies got a taste of power.

5. Now instead of doing what they should have done all along, ignore the crazy uncle at the family reunion and restructure the party around more populist ideas, the right's chosen to take another dip in the crazy pool. Hey, it worked in 2000 and 2004.

Problem is they had to go to the deep end this time, because the world changes, and it's constantly becoming more progressive.

So it's not that there are more crazies, or that the party itself is becoming crazier.

Problem is Republicans gave the crazies a huge soap box and a cable network to spew their crazy on. So there are less and less moderate Republicans, and the crazies get louder and louder.

It's the same number as it's always been though, probably less actually, with the internet and access to information and all.
