Is the human race worth saving?

In my idealistic youth, I advocated getting humans off the planet so that we didn't have all of our eggs in one basket (just in case we blew ourselves up or got hit by a giant meteor, or something catostraphic).  Now, in my cynical middle age, I don't care.

Yes. There's way more good than bad in the world.

Sometimes this isn't so clear because we only hear about the bad stuff on the news.

If the human race isn't worth saving, what is?

surely if we're all dead, it doesn't matter what else exists anymore... so why think anything's worth saving if we can't even get the enthusiasm to save ourselves?

Side: Yeah

Bravo Pyggy! There is nothing worth saving if you think life must always be lived without hope for a different outcome for people...but in order to have that each of us must be up for being a bit more pro-active than we have been in our own lives and in that of our world. Instead of making a list of resolutions that most of us don't keep anyway, make a list of changes you would like to see accomplished on any level. Next to any of the things you list, put a mark next to those which you could help in accomplishing and just do them or just do your part. If you truly find there is nothing you can do then perhaps yours is the part of the human race not worth saving! Think about it.

But only if you happen to be a human,

or like a pet of a human,

honestly though at this point, if we put it to an interspecies vote, I'm afraid there's way more beasts than even our 10 billion strong pro-human vote would garner.

luckily we're the only ones bright enough to figure that out (don't tell the polar bears Joe!)

Pyg had an excellent point though, and he rarely gets credit for pointing out deep facts.

The fact is, it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, specifically because there isn't a grand scheme. If every human disappeared today, if there were some thing over-looking all the cosmos, they probably wouldn't even notice.

So yeah, really it only matters if you happen to be a human. Otherwise, why bother?

All that said, worth saving from what? Are we in some eminent danger that I'm not aware of?

Side: Yeah

We are in eminent danger of a magnetic pole shift that will shut down the Earth's magnetic field thus exposing us to harmful solar radiation!!! We will all get a tan!!!

Side: Yeah

Being a human myself, I may be a little biased, but I think that I would like the proud heritage of humanity to last well into the future. We've done a lot of work to make the world to our liking, and I don't think that any of the other species would really appreciate it.

What about the polar bears? Would they appreciate it if we were gone?

If you see somebody seriously injured and he/she asks you to call the hospital you will probably do it. If that can be assumed then by definition 1 life is worth saving. If one life is worth saving then isn't all life worth saving?

While many people may believe that the human race is not worth saving, you are correct. For those of us who believe the human race is worth saving we are correct as well. It is a simple answer with an even simpler explanation. Those of humanity who choose to look at all of its faults are ultimately dooming it to a slow and painful death. Those who choose to believe in the good of humanity are ultimately furthering its goodness along and making my statement correct.

I will back my claim with yet another question: Why do you get up in the morning? Do you get up for your children? Your parents? Your friends? Do you enjoy the embrace of your special someone? Your answer to that question may also answer why humanity deserves to live.

Side: Yeah

I get up to check what I missed here on CD while I slept ;)

What for? So that we have more of the same?

No the human race is so extremly corrupt right now its ridiculous.

To be honest, I really don't think the human race is worth saving. We are a destructive, selfish and greedy race. At the moment we are destroying not only the world we live in, but the habitat of other inhabitants of the earth. Unless us humans can stop being so greedy and think of the long term effects of our actions and stop putting money before morals, we do not deserve to be saved.

Excellent points. I wouldn't be surprised if you're a right brained intuitive (Search: MBTI). I'd like to make a civilization of just right brained individuals and then watch the left brained predators cheat and enslave each other on CCTV

I think I may have been on the other side of this argument a few years ago, but as you grow older and see what the human race does (not what it is capable of) you see that it is not worth saving. Humans are a plague on the world, sucking it dry of resources in the selfish manner that is as inherent to us as any other species on this planet. It is this selfishness that sustains us both as individuals and as a species. To use my favorite movie as a means of understanding, look at Donnie Darko. In this movie, he serves as a Christ-like character as he must die in order to save the human race in his dimension. At first, he is unwilling. He compares humans to rabbits, saying that rabbits are not worth crying over because they are not relatable and have never feared death to begin with. His teacher does us the favor of pointing out that the rabbits are representative of mankind. As the movie progresses, people commit horrible acts. A motivational speaker is revealed as a participant in kiddy porn, his best teacher is fired on poor cause, a couple of punks threaten him with knives, a guy runs over his girlfriend (killing her), etc. All of this would reinforce Donnie's perception of humans as unworthy of sympathy. The human race is not worth saving. Now, in order to subvert a counterargument predicated on misunderstanding, the movie sets out to prove to us that a person can be worth dying for. You see, Donnie does sacrifice himself to save his girlfriend Gretchen Ross, but not the human race. In the movie they call this the insurance trap. We must be able to recognize the difference between an individual and a population (and/or species). A person can be wonderful, but our species is a disgrace that makes many quality individuals ashamed to count themselves as members of mankind. The world would be better without us and our negligence and disregard. Just because the instinct to preserve oneself is wired into us through evolution, does not mean that it is an unalterable truth. To see beyond the limitations of the immediate is one of mankind's greatest abilities, however, we ignore it when it is convenient. The human race is not worth saving and will not be saved. No one will intervene unless we deserve it and the day that we do deserve it we will not need it. People attribute so much to a benevolent god and life after death. This is an excuse to not live properly now, predicated on the idea that we will get a second chance to do right. Regardless of belief in religion, morality, spirituality, or any other thing that we allow to characterize us, we will inevitably destroy this world and drain it of everything it has because we can not overcome our base instincts to look after ourselves and to reproduce. This is the race that we are all a part of. It is not a race worth saving.

Humans piss me off. They get too emotional and some are so stubborn that you just want to punch them but you can't because through human expectations you are supposed to be more mature and what-not.

Not at our current state. In fact, at our current state, we are a danger to the planet and we are creating a ticking bomb for its innevitable destruction.

Side: Nah

Absolutely not. Right brain individuals are worth saving but left brains breed like cancer. They are foolish and predatory. They represent the human race at the current time and their epitath will be written in the cinders of a nuclear holocaust.

In nerd terms, right brain is Captain Kirk, and left brain is Spock. We all know Kirk and Spock need each other to better themselves. Pure right and pure left aren't so good, but together, they help drive innovation, science, technology, policy, and everything else. (Also, right brains, the ones who act impulsively, seem to me to be the ones most likely to destroy the Earth in a nuclear holocaust, but that is neither here nor there).

In other words, yes, the human race is worth saving, even if that is a biased wish to remain alive. Sure, there are many corrupt and evil individuals, but collectively, it seems to me that the world tends to advance rather than retreat in progress, even if the timeline is slow.

Personally I feel that if a race is worth saving they would be concerned about those that are not able to easily defend or take care of themselves due to injuries. I fall into that as I am not able to get what I need in life to be successful because of the laws and regulations that make the life of a drug addict far more important that myself. I am in chronic pain due to back injuries, and chronic sinusitis, also unable to think clearly because the medications require lots of tests that no doctors are willing to do and I can't afford to pay for them. Also I am in constant pain and have vision problems due to broken bones deliberately caused by my former employer. I am not able to get disability payments from EDD but according to the rules far as I know I have had all my doctors submit the proper paperwork, as I am not able to work full time and doubt that I will ever be able to again for the rest of my life. I prey for WWWIII every day, as that is the only way that I can see reasonable based on the way the world works to end my suffering and that of millions of others in like situations. Also it would keep those people that caused our suffering from doing it again.

According to the Bible God flooded the earth, destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for the same things as are ever day things here in the world today not just in the USA but in countries around the world. I know that I may nit be saved in any rapture, but that beats suffering and left with ending my life as the only options to me to end my suffering.

Why? I mean, really? The Sun's just going to explode anyway, the Earth is going to be destroyed. Also, are you talking about the human race on Earth? Or the possibility of human life elsewhere in space?

Side: Nah

No because everybody knows how it's going to end.there's going to be to much people around the world there going to be lots of pollution then WW III starts then planet earth will have to much pollution that our vegetation can't control and we will all suffocate to death.so thats why the human race shouldn't be saved.
