The concept of hell makes no sense.
There are still a few places on this planet that have not been touched by civilization. For example, parts of the Amazon forest. There are people living there that have never met a modern human. If they perform acts that are considered by some religions as a sin, have they sinned? Should they be punished for all eternity? Should anyone be punished for all eternity? If so, what would be the point?
If there is no such thing as life after death, then (obviously) the concept of hell is moot. But, if there is life after death, then, when you kill someone, have you really killed them? If there is life after death, which is the real/important life? This life or your eternal life? It can't be this life because whatever you do here will eventually not matter. However, whatever you do in your eternal life would hold more significance. So, if whatever you do here will not matter in the long run, why should you be punished for eternity?
If there is life after death then, for all practical purposes, this life is more like a video game. You wouldn't punish someone for being an ass hole in a video game. If the purpose of his life is to learn how to be a decent individual, then why punish them for eternity? Just have them go back and try again until they learn.

1. I have no control over people getting pissed off at debates that are clearly meant tongue in cheek. True, but we both know that you are fully aware of which tongue in cheek debates will illicit very real negative responses. 2. This is not the only serious debate I have ever created.
