mostly i just ignore joe because he's a troll who seems to think he's god's gift of comic relief to the masses.

this time, though, his reply went unnoticed in the second page of my notifications section.

(it's still gonna get ignored, though)

I laughed the first time I heard about this.

Then I saw this debate topic.

Then I laughed again.

"I am siding with the victims' families."

I'm glad we agree on that count. It'd be a shame for the people who had their families killed by terrorists to also have to watch their country cave to the bullying and fear that the extremists were attempting to spread.

Terrorists don't hate buildings; they want to cause fear. They want to break us down. When we lash out at our own citizens, when we exchange our freedom for the illusion of security, we're giving them what they want.

So here's where I stand: I don't particularly want the goddamn mosque.

I wish it had never been planned.

I wish whoever planned it had given it more thought and chosen a different location.

I wish the media hadn't picked up on it to gain a few extra viewers, wish they hadn't single handedly turned it into the spectacle that it has become.

But now that it's become a matter of breaking the law over a perceived insult - something the center was never meant to be-?

Now that ill-informed pundits are using it as a weapon, caring more about the publicity their wild statements will gain them than the actual victims?

Now I will be pretty fucking pissed if this bullying forces the mosque down.

To me, this was a local issue that got turned into a constitutional issue after it got way too much attention.

Here, let me quote directly from your source:

"The archdiocese and Port Authority now offer sharply conflicting accounts of where things went wrong. The Port Authority has claimed the church was making additional demands -- like wanting the $20 million up front and wanting to review plans for the surrounding area. They say the church can still proceed on its own if it wishes.

"St. Nicholas Orthodox Church has always had and will continue to have the right to rebuild on its original location. The question was whether public money would be spent to build a much larger church at a separate location on the site and ensuring that construction wouldn't delay the World Trade Center further," spokesman Stephen Sigmund said in a written statement. "On that question, we worked for many years to reach an agreement and offered up to 60 million dollars of public money to build that much larger new church. After reaching what we believed was an agreement in 2008, representatives of the church wanted even more public commitments, including unacceptable approvals on the design of the Vehicle Security Center that threatened to further delay the construction on the World Trade Center and the potential for another $20 million of public funds."

Sigmund said the "final offer" was made last year, which again included $60 million.

"They rejected that offer," he said."

It seems clear to me that this is a convoluted legislative issue, not a religious one. The mosque, on the other hand, is privately funded - allowing it to leap over the red tape that the church ran into by requesting government funding.

Trust me, I'd be just as up in arms as you if the government stopped a privately funded church from building for no reason. Hell, it could be that this is already the case and the government is denying it. Stranger things have happened. But until I see some decent proof, I'll stake that this has more to do with legislation than persecution.

"Doesn't seem like it."

oh, come on, you must be enjoying the debates. don't tell me you haven't been printing out our conversations and masturbating with them.

i can't be the only one.

"I am not gay."

love doesn't have to be physical, you know.

>

"you don't know what you're walking away from"

you aren't the one who said this. i'm just quoting it because it is still true.

"We want 9/11 to be remembered and the victims to be honored."

That's wonderful. So do I.

>

"9/11 never happened? Try explaining what you said to the victims families."

You're putting words in my mouth. The "offense that doesn't exist" is your assumption that the victims' families will be outraged by a community center two blocks away. You're projecting your own stereotypes and righteous indignation on people who understand the situation better than you do.

Name one law that would make building a community center on private property two blocks away from ground zero illegal.

Go ahead, I have time.

"When was the last time you saw liberals standing up for religious rights for something Christian to be built."

When was the last time Christian property rights were infringed?

Show me the situation, and I'll stand up for it. Simple as that.

The manger is a completely different situation, by the way. Public offices can't favor any one religion, it's as simple as that. If the police ask you to get a manger off your lawn, THAT'S a rights violation. But that never happens in America.

Remember, remember the 11th of September,

The terrorists and hijacked planes

I can think of no reason

For the right winged legion

To cause such disaster again.
