For those who want to be technical. Slavery as it once existed in the united states has ended. Slavery around the world still exists if not in a more meager form. Nazism as a fringe ideology still exists but the threat of Nazism to global security has effectively ended. Fascism, well I'm not sure what this is even referring to, but Fascism is alive and well today. Communism wasn't really ended by war at least not in any direct way, the USSR fell because it's economy couldn't be sustained.

So while war is a terrible thing that results in many deaths, it must remain an option when all other negotiations fail, and yes sometimes it actually works.

It ended the lives of many, ended the happiness of their families, fucked up economies, slowed down progress of societies, divided countries, and a long list of et ceteras.

Except for those, war never really solved or ended anything at all. Probably the only good thing any war has ever done was defeating Hitler. He caused the war, so it was, in a way, necessary, otherwise the world would end up in his wrong hands.

But it didn't end anything. Slavery, Fascism, Communism, and Nazism, they all still exist. Only slavery is subtle nowadays, nazism is powerless and reduced to punks with delusions of activism, communism and fascism are still a reality in some countries (russian countries, china, etc). And also, there are still some dictatorships in existence, although nothing alarming when compared to Hitler's dictatorship.

This is both true and false.

Nazism hasn't ended anywhere, period. It just has no huge power in the global scale.

Communism never had any power to begin with that needed to be ended... it was just dictators saying they were communist when they were obviously off by a long shot after you look at the ideals of Karl Marx.

Once you throw that bit of information out, war has solved absolutely nothing in anything. Not wars for territory, resources, religion, spite, morality, etc. It never solves anything and never will. The ending of human lives through savage combat over such-and-such concept isn't going to make humankind any better as a whole.

True, but Slavery, Fascism, Nazism and Communism are extremely bad, so I'm glad they were solved.

I think a better thing to say would be that war has helped stopped imperial countries of certain ideologies from continuing their imperialism.

The Third Reich was a danger towards Europe and Hitler and the SS were monsters. While it's possible that we could have stopped the Third Reich in some other way, War seems to have worked.

As for Communist take over, we focused more on giving aid to countries that were threatened by Communism. The Vietnam and Korean War wasn't our war, exactly, it was theirs. American interest was to keep the Communist from getting strong, and i'm not too sure if the Cold War and this whole macho man thing vs. the commies was the right thing to do, but never-the-less, the USSR has fallen, but I would attribute that more to American competition with the Soviets. We had a better economy and they could not keep up.

As for slavery, the Civil War did not really end slavery. In fact, the war started because of Federal failures to keep up with the Great Compromise. Slavery eventually dissolved after the war, and it is somewhat the attributed to the victory of the North, but the cost in lives may not have been worth it. After all, it wasn't victory that ended slavery, it was legislation.

War, to me, is not always necessary, but thinking up alternatives isn't always that easy. What we should do, instead of being a bunch of assholes who point the finger, is look to past and see what we could have done better and apply that to the future.
