We shouldn't give away free food for the same reason we shouldn't feed wild animals

The SNAP/Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is pleased to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever.
 
Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed The Animals." This is because the animals may grow dependent on handouts and not learn to take care of themselves.

Wild animals are able to forage for themselves people with no money are not without resorting to crime, if people are starving they should be fed

The homeless seem to do fine. How long does one have to pan handle in order to make enough money to buy 3 happy meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner)? ;)

Instead of food, why not science grants?

Anyone can do science, so if I had more money, I could hire more lab assistants. I know not all homeless people are good at science, but I'm sure they can learn. Humans are naturally curious.

Seriously, if you needed food, if you got paid to suffer for people's entertainment...that would be horrible

Why not re-open the Workhouses or Roman style Gladitorial Games, let the poor and less fortunate make the rich richer and keep them entertained. In case you missed it i'm being sarcastic
