Will we be able to recognize alien life when we see it?

There is still no clear definition of what life is.

Evolution is part of it, as is the related concept of passing genetic information from one generation to the next. Metabolism is part of it, altering the chemical balance of its environment in a way that wouldn’t happen otherwise.
But while some things are definitely non-living and others decidedly alive, there’s a shadowy region in between.

That’s the realm of the viruses and the rogue proteins called prions — infamous for causing bovine spongiform encephalopathy ("mad cow disease"). Viruses have DNA or RNA but must invade cells to reproduce. Prions are notable because they can transmit information and reproduce without DNA by hijacking other proteins, most damagingly inside brain tissue. Viruses and prions are often harmful, but some types of yeast benefit from prions, and mammals use virus DNA to keep mothers from rejecting fetuses in the womb. Neither are alive in a strict sense — they don’t grow or multiply without joining themselves to an organism — yet they can mutate and evolve under the pressure of natural selection.

"Clearly [a virus] has the capability of following Darwinian evolutionary principles, but not without a host cell," says David Lynn of Emory University. To him, life and non-life lie on a continuum: "There is some transition where we might be able to distinguish something that is evolvable on a chemical level and something that is evolvable at a biological level." In other words, there’s a blurry division between something that requires an external catalyst — a host cell, brain tissue — to evolve, and something that can evolve and reproduce on its own. At some point, lifeless chemical processes slipped across that division and became recognizably alive.

With thousands of catalogued exoplanets, the range of chemical possibilities could be huge. We cannot afford to assume all life would follow the same path it did on Earth, biologically or chemically.

So, I hope some of you found this interesting. Or, at the very least, a nice break from the drama debates.

All of this time spent associating you with trolling, and now look. You come up with a perfectly legitimate and interesting debate, and the overwhelming majority of the responses are obnoxious and off topic.

What's happened, Jolie.

You are alienated from God by your sin. To God, you are the alien and not entitled to live in His Kingdom. He died for you, paid the price of your sin in death, and rose from the dead offering you forgiveness if you believe on Him...desiring to make you His child so you won't have to be alienated from Him forever in Hell.

Life is knowing God, and Jesus Christ. Life is eternal. Knowing God is eternal life.

As I said above, there is FAR more proof of what I say than what you believe.

Life is knowing the truth about our world and universe, which is NOT eternal as it exists. We know that there will be an end to it. Likely to ours before the universe itself. That "end" could be a new beginning with the process starting all over again, THAT we DO NOT know.

Now. If our world is destroyed by YOUR "God", I will be SOOOO glad I didn't follow him! By the way, If the Earth dies will heaven still be "above"????

The fact that you do not know what life is only proves that you don't know. I know. You can know. You prefer ignorance because you love your sin more than life, and you can have it. Congratulations.

Your position is noted. I respect your right to have it. I wish you welHowever, you can preach " 'til hell freezes over" and it will not change my mind. Only your god could change my mind and it doesn't seem in any hurry to do so. I try to ignore anything that is not based in fact. Kind of like "innocent until proven guilty. If your god is a loving god, as you say, s/he/it should understand, as Rabbi Maimonides once said: "Do not consider it a proof just because it is written in books, for a liar who will deceive with his tongue will not hesitate to do the same with his pen."

Apparently YOU do not accept that as a caution. I do. I would expect that your "loving god" would, at least, consider a "creation's" caution about a written word, especially since history has given us so many charlatans, like Jim Jones and David Koresh (just to name a couple), and , maybe show up and bring a little convincing with it. That's all I ask. It doesn't have to bring Armageddon and the destruction of the world, I mean, is THAT showing "LOVE"?? What does it gain by destroying all "his" work?? I mean, "tough love" is useful, but, what good does it do him to fill Satan's coffers with souls?? Just drop in and say: "Hey, boy, le'me tell you what!" Take away the phoniness and I'll believe the "truth". That's all I ask. Until then, You can believe "....what is written in books" all you want. If your god doesn't care about "his creations" enough to make an appearance and clear up the confusion it has allowed, then, I will look for the truth elsewhere.

Believe what you wish. I believe what I see.

I have noted that you expect to be free of Hell forever. I have also noted that I told you more than once how you can be secure in God's forgiveness and pardoned from Hell, and I have noted that you don't care what God did to save you from Hell..........

Therefore I have concluded that you are going to Hell, and since you don't care, why should I bother trying to talk sense to you?

This is a wonderful display of ignorance. God became a man to die in your place, He took your guilt on Himself and paid. You don't care, there is nothing more God can do for you. Your blood is on your own head, and you can't get yourself out of guilt and are paying for it in death......hoping to avoid Hell by your own arrogance, you are a fool and it sickens me to listen to you condemning yourself.

Consider evolution on an alternate planet inhabited by certain life forms. The course of evolution would differ significantly to Earth's as creatures adapt to the surroundings specific to their habitat. The environment plays a key role in the course of evolution and due to Earth's very unique environment, species have been exposed to natural selection and our rapidly changing conditions which kill off some animals. What is left are species that have adapted and survived the planets variety of environments and there is no doubt that the Earth's environment would differ to some degree.

Furthermore, if we are presupposing that 'alien life' is as intellectually capable as us then their anatomical structure would be similar to ours but their outwards appearance may differ significantly. As humans, we are much more reliant on our intellect for survival rather than our brawn. Other animals have built in functions that might help them, say, for example, crack open a nut, however, most species are not great innovators. Humans have survived the process of natural selection mainly due to our ability to be creative, explore our curiosities, solve problems and use logical reasoning. These abilities inadvertently impacted on our physical strength and gave us a traits that favoured brains over brawn. On another planet, a similar process of evolution would have resulted in a certain species also favouring intelligence as physical strength became redundant.

Do I look like I care.. Wait, I forgot... you can't see me!

It kind of depends on "when we see it". If we have developed enough intelligence to accept what we are seeing, maybe.

Many religious sects will not accept an alien being as of now, because it will likely shoot their beliefs down. I think there is FAR more proof that they have been here before than there is that a "god" created our world.

No. I don't see where I am "tying religion to aliens". I simply said there is FAR more evidence that THEY have been here than that "GOD" exists.

Somebody was on the American continents that cut huge stones to a very precise flatness, squareness, cut fine slots that are precise to within thousandths of an inch and moved them around, fit them together, mined them in places miles away, and moved stone that weighed tens to hundreds of tons, even stacked them atop each other. Here and in other parts of the world. This LONG before Jesus' time, and it would be difficult to impossible for US to do these things today! And you haven't even heard it all!!!!!!!

You are assuming you know what they are, and you have no way of knowing if they are telling the truth about anything. That is because you are lost from the Truth and have not begun to know anything.

Anything that appears or makes people believe they are aliens is of demonic origin. It's a deception, and you are buying it and going to pay for it in Hell as a sinner who didn't care that he's broken God's law and owes God for his life. It amazes me how void of common sense people can be, and how easily they believe the most make believe stories of deviant minds ....the more unbelievable, the more people believe it I guess, as long as it makes them feel like they have the right to be sinners and exist outside of Hell.
